Faithful Stewards Light the Way with $28,500 Donor Challenge

Mabel Lillian Oas Strand Women’s Locker Room

The National Lutheran Home & Village is a family with a long history in the community.  The ministry carries on with a caring staff, enthusiastic auxiliary, patient volunteers and generous donors. In appreciation for the welcoming and caring environment at NLHV that has been home since 1890 to more than 3000 residents, many faithful stewards come forward to offer meaningful donations to strengthen services NLHV offers.

The Strand Family, Russell, sister Susan Voigt and brother Marlin, often visited their mother, Helen Strand, who lived at NLHV for about four a half years and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Bethesda. Russell felt that the hands-on staff is the backbone of the Home’s ministry. He and his siblings wanted to enhance some part of the staff’s daily life in appreciation for the care their mother received.

Sometimes opportunities to give donations pop up in surprising ways. On one visit the Strand family was walking through the lower level and a family member entered the women’s locker room. The room’s bright orange color scheme has not been updated significantly since the Rockville facility was built in 1980. The Strands inquired about ways the locker room could be more appealing and updated for the staff.

The Strand Family combined resources for a gift of $28,500 to fund the renovation in partnership with NLHV.  It will be dedicated the Mabel Lillian Oas Strand Women’s Locker Room when completed.

The family is hopeful that their gift will inspire another family or group of donors to offer a similar gift to renovate the men’s locker room.

Donors interested in setting up a donation for the men’s locker room or other beautification projects for the home should contact, Dale Snyder, Planned Giving and Major Donor Specialist  (301) 424-9560 ext, 19202 or dsnyder@nlhv.org.

Reformation Lutheran Church, New Market, Va., Offers $47,000 Gift

The act of giving of one’s self for another is a rewarding and worthwhile pursuit.  The congregation of Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market, Va., led by Pastor Jeff Sonafelt have put those words into action and offered a generous gift of $47,000 to the National Lutheran Home & Village that will be used as seed money to further the ministry of the Winchester, Va., continuing care retirement community project.  Gratitude is due the members of Reformation for understanding how to continue God’s work beyond their walls and within in the larger community of Christ.

Reformation Lutheran Church received a gift of an estate from a former member. Working with Pastor George Sims, VA Synod Gift Planner, the congregation decided to tithe a portion of the estate to extend the ministry’s reach.  NLHV and ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal were among the gift recipients.

On Sunday, May 18, 2008, Dale Snyder, Planned Giving and Major Donor Specialist, was privileged to represent NLHV during a celebration worship. Pastor Sonafelt led worship and Pastor Sims, also former pastor of Reformation, assisted. Pastor Chip Gunsten, assistant to Bishop Mauney of the VA Synod, shared a Trinity Sunday message emphasizing the importance of the cycle of giving and the connection that we share in baptism into the church of the triune God.
