Volunteer Opportunities

The Auxiliary is successful because of its many volunteers. Volunteers of all religious affiliations are welcome. To become a volunteer contact  Auxiliary@nlhv.org  or Auxiliary Office (301) 424-9560 ext. 11000.

Spring and Fall Festivals – The Spring Festival is held the 1st Saturday in May and the Fall Festival is held the 2nd Saturday in November.  Volunteers may donate items for sale and assist in setting up, staffing, and packing up the booths.  Income from these fund-raisers has enabled the Auxiliary to provide $100,000 for building the Chapel; Chapel niches and artwork, buses and mini-buses with wheelchair lifts; the greenhouse added in 1988; and the patio and fountain were dedicated in 2002.

Pal Program  – The Pal Program is a one-to-one visitation program offering an opportunity to become a special friend to an elderly resident. A visitor is very special to a person coping with illness or loneliness. A visit by a Pal can offer a laugh, a word of comfort or simply good conversation to a resident assuring him or her that someone cares. Basic requirements of this program are minimal. A Pal is asked to bring a gift of love and share it in a personal way with a resident. Visits may be made as frequently as desired, but minimum of one visit per month is ideal. Visits may be made as anytime which is mutually convenient for both the Pal and the resident being visited. The Annual Pal Tea is held on the third Sunday in May, a special event enjoyed by Pal program participants and all residents of the Home.

The Auxiliary and the NLHV staff support the Pal Program.  The assignment of a Pal to a resident is made by the Pal Committee with the assistance of NLHV Social Services.

Christmas and Birthday Parties – A Christmas Cookie Party is held on the second Thursday of December.  At Christmas a gift is provided to each resident.  We always need volunteers to supply home-baked cookies and to set-up, wait tables, and clean up at the Party.

Volunteers are needed to bake cakes and to serve at the birthday parties held the 3rd Wednesday of the month for 1st and 2nd floor residents and the 1st Wednesday of the month for 3rd floor residents.  The Auxiliary provides a gift to residents on their birthday.  Musicians, especially pianists, are needed to entertain at the 3rd floor parties.

Gift Shop – After the Home moved to Rockville in 1980, the Auxiliary opened a Gift Shop near the lobby. Many volunteers are needed to staff the shop.

BINGO  – Games are held the fourth Wednesday of the month at 2:15 p.m.

Stamp Program – Residents and faithful volunteers help sort and prepare stamps to be sold.  We are always in need of stamp donations as well as volunteers to help process the stamps.

Volunteers also serve as Key People and Synod Representatives who represent the Auxiliary and the Home in their respective congregations or Synod.  If your church does not have a key person or your Synod does not have a Synod Representative, please consider serving in one of these capacities.
