(ROCKVILLE, MD) -- The National Lutheran Home for the Aged (NLHA) in Rockville, Md., a senior living and healthcare ministry founded in 1890, has appointed Larry Bradshaw as Chief Executive Officer. The NLHA, which was reorganized in 2008, is the parent organization overseeing two senior living and healthcare subsidiaries: the National Lutheran Home & Village at Rockville (NLHV) and The Village at Orchard Ridge (TVOR), currently under development in Winchester, Va. The announcement was made by Faith Bauersfeld, president of the NLHA Board of Trustees and chair of the Executive Search Committee.
“The 119 year history of NLHA in serving seniors and their families is a mission we’ve carried out faithfully, adapting to challenges and opportunities along the way. The Board of Trustees is confident that Larry brings a great combination of financial acumen, industry knowledge, experience with expansion and passion for high quality senior care that makes him the right choice for Chief Executive Officer,” said Bauersfeld.
“The Lutheran Home has a storied history and a commitment to senior care that is second to none. I’m pleased to be joining the organization and leading the mission expansion efforts,” said Bradshaw.
In Bradshaw’s recent work experience he oversaw $300 million in expansion, re-invention and start-up projects related to residential, assisted living and healthcare. NLHA has expansion and renovation master plans for both the Winchester and Rockville communities.
In Bradshaw’s prior experience he was responsible for the overall financial health and performance and an operating revenue budget of $150 million. Among his accomplishments over a 20 year time frame was increasing the liquidity position from approximately $4 million to more than $100 million. Maryland Health Care Commission 2008 Family Satisfaction Survey
Our Maryland Health Care Commission 2008 Family Satisfaction Survey results are excellent. Our familes responded by opening their hearts and sharing their feelings about the care our staff provides. The response rate for the National Lutheran Home & Village families was 70 percent compared to the 59 percent average for the entire state of Maryland. The overall care rating for our facility was 9.1 out of 10. The average in Maryland was 8.2. Fully 99 percent of our respondents said they would recommend us to others. We are very pleased that families feel so connected to caregiving and the vote of confidence from families matters.
We met or exceeded our own 2007 survey markes in every area. Most notably, the place we made the most improvement in is the Autonomy and Residents Rights area. This means that we make a superior effort to listen and hear what residents are sharing with us about the way they want to live thier lives. We make resident reights a priority and it shows in the survey results.

Faithful Stewards Light the Way with Donor Challenge
Ruth M. Strand Women’s Locker Room
The National Lutheran Home & Village is a family with a long history in the community. The ministry carries on with a caring staff, enthusiastic auxiliary, patient volunteers and generous donors. In appreciation for the welcoming and caring environment at NLHV that has been home since 1890 to more than 3000 residents, many faithful stewards come forward to offer meaningful donations to strengthen services NLHV offers.
The Strand Family, Russell, sister Susan Voigt and brother Marlin, often visited their mother who lived at NLHV for about four a half years and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Bethesda. Russell felt that the hands-on staff is the backbone of the Home’s ministry. He and his siblings wanted to enhance some part of the staff’s daily life in appreciation for the care their mother received.
Sometimes opportunities to give donations pop up in surprising ways. On one visit the Strand family was walking through the lower level and a family member entered the women’s locker room. The room’s bright orange color scheme has not been updated significantly since the Rockville facility was built in 1980. The Strands inquired about ways the locker room could be more appealing and updated for the staff.
The Strand Family combined resources for a gift of $28,500 to fund the renovation in partnership with NLHV. It will be dedicated the Ruth M. Strand Women’s Locker Room when completed.
The family is hopeful that their gift will inspire another family or group of donors to offer a similar gift to renovate the men’s locker room.
Donors interested in setting up a donation for the men’s locker room or other beautification projects for the home should contact, Dale Snyder, Planned Giving and Major Donor Specialist. (301) 424-9560 ext. 19202 or dsnyder@nlhv.org.
